The first and only one of its kind that will bring together the best of three ecosystems as a sporting scenario

Welcome back to the VisitSonora blog! Today we have some very exciting news: on October 22nd and 23rd of this year the Sonora Desert will host an event of great magnitude, we are talking about the Gran Carrera del Desierto, the first and only one of its kind that will bring together the best of three ecosystems as a sporting scenario.

This event has been promoted by the Governor of the State, Alfonso Durazo Montaño, with the help of the Federal Government, and is organized by Grupo Expansion in order to promote it and turn it into an anchor event for Sonora that will attract more and more competitors and become a tradition. This emblematic competition will bring together participants from more than 10 nationalities and will be held in the sacred space that is the Gran Desierto de Altar, declared World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2013.

The modalities of the event will be four: Ultra Trail 75K, Desert Run 50K, Beach & Desert Run 25K, and Beach Fun Run, for different levels of competitors. In addition, registrations will cost from $15 to $250 and can be made through the website www.grancarreradeldesierto.com.mx. The details of the modalities are as follows: Ultra Trail 75k (Saturday 22 and Sunday 23). The first day will be 50 kilometers. Starting in the middle of the desert, competitors will face a demanding route going from the central desert area to the pristine beaches of the upper Gulf of California, where a spectacular starlit night awaits. The second day will be 25 kilometers; the following day the competitors will again run through a desert section: a dune area that will test the strength and endurance of even the most experienced ultra runners, finishing in the marshlands area where the desert and the sea interact and intermingle in a unique environment.

Mega Desert Run 50k (Saturday 22 and Sunday 23). The first day will be 25 kilometers. Starting in the middle of the desert, the competitors will face a route that will take them along the Sierra Pinta mountain range through paths between rocky mountains and the open desert. Going from the central desert zone to the pristine beaches of the upper Gulf of California, where a spectacular starlit night awaits. The second day will also be 25 kilometers: one day later the competitors will run again through a dune area to finish in the marshlands area where the desert and the sea interact and intermingle in an unparalleled environment.

Beach & Desert Run 25k (Sunday 23). The Great Desert Run also opens the opportunity to less experienced runners who want to test their physical abilities with the Beach & Desert Run which runs the same 25k route on the second day of the Ultra Trail.

Beach Fun Run 10k (Sunday 23). The general public will have the opportunity to enjoy these magical surroundings with the Beach Fun Run, where experienced and inexperienced runners will be able to run or walk along a route specially designed for fun.
